酒器のイシヅキ部分を細くして、首からぶら下げて持ち歩くお猪口をデザインしました。

山の間伐作業から出た節もあれば曲がりもある材料を使って、その木だからこそできる形が取れるようなデザインができないだろうかと考えました。

一目で同じシリーズだとわかる統一されたデザイン、それでいてひとつひとつがオリジナルでかつ形が洗練できるものを目指し、寸法の指定を極限まで抑えた製作プロセスを考えて作っています。

プロダクトデザインというと、デザインがあって図面があって、発注・受注し、発注に対して高い制度を持って製作するという工程を踏む場合が多いですが、この場合、デザインは製作に正しく情報を伝えようとするし、製作者は図面を正しく作ろうとします。

そのため、どうしても出来上がった製品というのは同じ形状・材質をしているし、同じ形状と材質として初めて商品の品質が証明できて各フェーズにいる職人の方たちは自分の仕事をアピールできるようになるのです。

ここに、性質も材質も形状も異なる材料を使ってしまうと瞬く間にエラーが出てきてしまうので、大体は素材を画一化したり木材であっても規格品を使うのが一般的です。

森で切り出した小径木をいかにして材料として、発注形式の職人の方をベースとしたものづくりラインで作家のような性質を持つプロダクトを生み出すことは、意外と難しい挑戦です。

まだまだプロトタイプですがこのような製作工程が確立できれば、使える材料も大きく幅が広がるし、機械化の進むものづくり業界で職人の手作りが差別化され新しい価値を創造することができるのではないか。

そんなちょっとこだわりのあるプロダクトがこの「ochoco」です。

そんな未だ光を浴びずに見つけられていないポテンシャルを持った外部空間にあかりを灯すことを目的にデザインしたライトです。

屋外使用を前提として、携帯性や軽量化、完全防水で作成しています。スタンド部分は転倒防止で足元をペグダウンできるよう穴が空いていて、同時に足を組み立てるためのボルト穴を兼ねています。

ホヤ部分だけを取り外してポータブルのシェードとしても使えるので、木に引っ掛けて使ったり手元などを照らすライトにも活用できます。

ありそうでなかった屋外空間をラグジュアリに演出して目印を作る提案です。

I designed a boar cup to be carried by hanging it from the neck by making the ishizuki part of the sake cup thinner.

I wondered if it would be possible to create a design that would take a shape that could only be achieved by using wood from thinning operations in the mountains, which has knots and bends in it.

I aimed for a unified design that would be instantly recognizable as part of the same series, yet each piece would be original and refined in form, and I designed a production process that minimized dimensional specifications.

In many cases, product design involves a design, a drawing, an order, and then production with a high level of systematization.

Therefore, the finished product inevitably has the same shape and material, and only as the same shape and material can the quality of the product be proven and the craftsmen in each phase be able to show off their work.

Here, using materials with different properties, materials, and shapes can lead to errors in the blink of an eye, which is why we generally standardize materials or even lumber.

It is a surprisingly difficult challenge to create a product that has the characteristics of an artist in a manufacturing line based on craftsmen in an order format, using small diameter wood cut from the forest as the material.

It is still a prototype, but if we can establish such a production process, the range of materials that can be used will greatly expand, and handmade by craftsmen will be differentiated and create new value in the increasingly mechanized manufacturing industry.

The “ochoco” is a product with a little bit of that kind of attention to detail.
