TABLE for family

子どもが成長するにつれて、リビングに求められる機能も少しずつ変化していきます。

特にリモートワークが始まると、子どもの宿題、仕事、夕食の準備といった、それぞれ異なる活動が同じ空間で交差するようになります。

今回、テーブルの設計を依頼いただいたご家庭では、L字型の絶妙なスケール感を持つリビング空間が特徴でした。ダイニングとリビングを明確に分けてしまうと、どちらのスペースも狭く感じられてしまい、空間のポテンシャルを活かしきれません。そこで、リビングの役割を隣接する畳空間にゆずり、フローリング部分にひとつの大きなテーブルを中心としたレイアウトを提案しました。

この大きなテーブルは、仕事、遊び、食事など多様な場面で活躍し、家族3人が自然と集まり、憩える場所になります。そして、このテーブルの特徴は、ただ使うだけではありません。分解や組み立て、さらにはサイズの調整まで、子どもを含む家族全員が一緒に行うことができます。

自分たちで手を動かし、テーブルという“自分たちの場所”を組み立てていくプロセスそのものが、暮らしの中に参加する体験になります。それは、空間を使いこなす自由度を知り、生活の中にある「仕組み」を理解することでもあります。

平日の朝や夕方、家族それぞれが違う目的でテーブルを囲んでいても、ひとつの場を共有することで、生活が分断されることなく、むしろ重なり合い、つながりが生まれます。

家庭の中に仕事の風景が入り込むようになった今、生活のリズムや使い方の違いをそのまま受け止めながら、共存できる場所として「家族のテーブル」があります。

Especially when remote work begins, different activities such as children's homework, work, and dinner preparation intersect in the same space.

The family who asked us to design their table featured an L-shaped living space with an exquisite sense of scale. If the dining room and living room were clearly separated, both spaces would feel small, and the potential of the space would not be fully utilized. Therefore, we proposed a layout in which the role of the living room is given over to the adjacent tatami space, and the wood flooring is centered around a single large table.

This large table is useful in a variety of situations, such as work, play, and meals, and provides a place where the family of three can naturally gather and relax. And the features of this table are not just for use. The entire family, including children, can work together to disassemble, assemble, and even adjust the size.

The process of assembling the table, a “place of their own,” with their own hands, is an experience of participation in daily life. It is also a way to learn how to use the space freely and to understand the “structure” of daily life.

Even if each family member has a different purpose around the table on weekday mornings and evenings, sharing one place does not divide life, but rather overlaps and creates connections.

Now that the landscape of work has become more and more integrated into the home, the “family table” is a place where we can coexist while accepting the differences in rhythm and usage of life as it is.
